Image Not Available for Strategic Air Command – The Free World's First Line of Defense: SAC's new commander, General Thomas Sarsfield Power, has ordered that one third of SAC's striking forces must be in a state of continuous alert. When an alert sounds minutes are saved because only take-off checking is necessary. If a plane does not leave the ground even for a day, the long pre-flight checking is done all over again before placing the bomber on a "ready" basis. Here maintenance men examine equipment in the tail section of a giant B-52. (52-23849)
